This workshop, divided into two sections, is designed to prepare young and experienced circus artists and performers to better think of themselves as a ‘company’.

The workshop teaches you:

· to categorise and to analyse the buying power of clients and employers.

· to anticipate their potential decision making process and know how to negotiate and influence this process.

· to understand your value and how to increase it.

· to understand why people 'buy’

· and how to ‘sell’ the art you train so hard to create.

The process being taught is fundamentaly about how to turn your personal circus practice into a sellable product and which markets you have a good chance in.

There are two days for two steps;

  1. The first lecture will be more informative and cover how the industry works, what our place is within it, and how we can use our position to get better-paid-work more often.
  2. The second part is more practical, where participants will have the opportunity to train selling yourself, working out where you fit in the market and how to develop skills to win the contracts that you desire.

Note: There will be homework between the two sessions. This workshop is not passive. It is about rethinking your self image, it's about practical exercises, and it's about doing the very difficult work of challenging.

In 20 years as a freelancer, employee and business owner, James has gained extensive experience on how the circus industry really works. James has worked in contemporary circus, grand scale resident shows, stadium ceremonies, variety, commercial and corporate events on big and small scales, underground venues, music festivals, arts festivals, self produced theatre seasons and street performance.  He hasn't worked in everything yet but he has worked in enough fields to create sound predictive models of how most market functions.This experience is complemented by information from many other artists and companions, corporate modeling and academic studies in the field of general business practice.

The result of this research is a comprehensive knowledge of the market - combining practice and theory.
